HSU TUNG-LUNG
Born in Pingtung, Taiwan in 1947, Hsu Dong-Rong decided to become an artist as if it was a natural and intrinsic calling. For him, there was no pressing need to achieve success or accomplish specific goals; it was simply a matter of passion and persistence that has defined his life for over forty years. Drawing on the nourishment from temple culture, training in jade carving and ceramics, and formal art education, Hsu has continuously challenged his own habits and broke away from established artistic practices. He has discarded familiar painting tools in favor of unconventional methods such as using a rice spoon or a kitchen knife to paint, or creating sculptures by smashing and reassembling clay. Today, Hsu describes his practice as a complete synthesis of painting and sculpture, where painting extends the spatial concepts of sculpture and sculpture redefines the essence of painting.
